Austin, Texas – more than just SXSW

 by Matt Beauchamp

Since it’s humble beginnings in 1987, South By South West (SXSW) has grown in both scope and size. Now dubbed the world’s largest gathering of creative professionals, SXSW features a music festival, film festival, comedy festival, tech conference, exhibition and gaming conference. All total, these events and the corresponding parties brought in over 225,000 people in 2018.

Taking place March 8-17, 2019, this world-renowned conference – known for attracting entrepreneurs in technology, engineering, and science as well as world-class musicians – is reason enough to head to Austin. But there is so much more to see and do while you’re there.
AirSprint fractional Owners have the flexibility of reaching Austin by flying into both the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (KAUS) as well as the Austin Executive Airport (KEDC) from anywhere in North America. Both locations offer a short 15-20-minute drive to the heart of Austin.
With non-stop flight times ranging from 3 hours and 20 minutes from Toronto on-board the Embraer Legacy 450 to 4 hours and 25 minutes from Vancouver on board the Cessna Citation CJ3+, the time you’ll spend travelling is reduced significantly.  Compare that to commercial travel out of Vancouver and Calgary – where no direct flights exist –  travel times are upwards of six to nine hours, and that’s not even counting the time spend in airport lines. You will be able to spent this time enjoying everything that “The Lone Star State” capital has to offer.
Where To Stay
If you’re looking for somewhere to stay that is both opulent and steeped in history then The Driskill is the place for you.
Set on the corner of 6th street and Brazos street in the heart of downtown Austin, The Driskill stands as a historic landmark. This Romanesque-style building was finished in 1886 and is Austin’s oldest operating hotel. For more than a century this iconic hotel, with its marble floors and stain glassed dome, has been setting the bar for hospitality in Austin.
If you’re looking for something more modern, then the Archer Hotel in North Austin is for you. This luxury boutique hotel couples sincere Southern hospitality with fashion, dining and nightlife in the Domain and Domain Northside districts.
Things To Do
One of Austin’s main taglines is “Keep Austin Weird,” as such there are lots of unique places to visit and things to do.
One of the hallmarks of Austin is their live music which has made them the live music capital of the world. Thanks in large part to the live-music show Austin City Limits, Austin’s music scene has been thriving since the mid 1970’s. If you’re looking to catch some live music you won’t have to look far, but spots like Broken Spoke, Continental Club and the Empire Control Room are worth exploring.
If you’re looking for something to fill your days before hitting the live music venues at night, then The Domain offers all the boutique and high end shopping you can handle. Austin is also home to one of the most popular college football teams, the Texas Longhorns. If you’re visiting during football season, check out a game or you can tour the stadium during the offseason.
Austin is also home to many world-class golf courses including the Austin Country Club home of the World Golf Championship – Dell Technologies Match Play event held March 28-31.
Want to extend your Texas trip by catching some Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo action? From Austin, you are only a short 30 minute Legacy 450 flight away from seeing artists such as Tim McGraw, Santana, Brad Paisley or George Strait on the final night of the rodeo on March 17th.  Your possibilities are practically endless.
Where To Eat
You can’t visit Austin without trying some of their local tex mex or BBQ. While many food trucks offer mouth-watering dishes, you can also check out places like Franklin’s Barbeque serving “the best barbeque in the known universe,” or Stubb’s Bar-B-Q which serves a side of music with your meal.
So, whether you’re heading to Austin to take in SXSW or you’re just looking for an unforgettable getaway, Austin has everything you need for the perfect vacation and, AirSprint has the right jet and program for your travel needs.
