Victoria Day – or the May long weekend as it’s more commonly referred to – marks the unofficial start to summer for many Canadians. This weekend is an opportunity to get out and enjoy our great country and what better way to celebrate Victoria Day than by taking in the city named after the British Monarch, Victoria, BC.
As an AirSprint owner you get easy and convenient access into Victoria as well as well as the rest of Vancouver Island. AirSprint Owners can fly directly into Nanaimo, Tofino or Victoria with flight times ranging in as short a time as 30 minutes from Vancouver or just under two hours from Edmonton.
Where to Stay
Fairmont Empress
With its beautiful coastline, there are amazing places to stay all over Victoria, with the crown jewel being the Fairmont Empress.
The Fairmont Empress has been recognized as one of the Top 21 Iconic hotels in the world by National Geographic Traveler. They have also been honoured with Travel + Leisure Magazine’s World’s Best Award for Top 10 City Hotels in Canada. Having just completed a $60+ Million renovation in 2017, this ‘Castle on the Coast’ is a stunning escape for anyone.
Abigail’s Hotel
Just three blocks from the harbour and nestled on the edge of downtown Victoria, Abigail’s Hotel blurs the lines between a small luxury hotel and a heritage bed-and-breakfast. This adult-only, intimate hotel is housed in a 1930’s Tudor mansion, creating an atmosphere that blends romance and charm.
Abigail’s hotel allows you to enjoy luxury that is personalized with a team that strives to provide a ‘home-away-from-home’ experience. It’s also located within walking distance to some of the city’s best restaurants and night spots.
Where to Eat
Victoria doesn’t just have some of the best restaurants in British Columbia, it has some of the best restaurants in the country. No matter what type of food you’re in the mood for, you’re going to find it. We recommend checking out:
Nourish Kitchen and Café
Nourish was created to make people feel healthy and happy and they accomplish this from within an 1888 heritage home-turned-restaurant.
Nourish’s first floor features a full-service dining room and seasonal patio that features a seasonal menu that shares their fascination with traditional food philosophies. Their second floor has two bright and beautiful upstairs rooms that serve as the café lounge allowing you to meet with friends or find a corner to work from with their free WIFI.
OLO is consistently rated as one of the best restaurants in Victoria and with their approach to food it’s easy to see why. OLO is nestled in Victoria’s Chinatown and pays homage to the region’s trade hub roots with its melting pot of cooking techniques. Sourcing locally, OLO combines an array of flavours to the best seasonal ingredients from the island.
10 Acres Bistro + Commons + Kitchen + Farm
10 Acres Bistro is the epitome of farm to table as the restaurant is literally named after their 10-acre farm. Most ingredients come sourced straight from their farm and when they need something they don’t have, they source it from other local, like-minded farmers.
Their menu is driven by the twice weekly harvest from their farm. Season by season the menu changes and allows guests to enjoy the most nutrient-dense fresh foods and allows their chefs to come up with unique and inspired dishes.
Things to Do
If you’re visiting on the Victoria Day long weekend, there are lots of things for you and your family to enjoy, the biggest of which is the Victoria Day Parade.
Victoria Day Parade
The largest parade in Victoria, the Victoria Day Parade attracts tens of thousands of visitors and features more than 150 entries from both Canada and the US. This free event takes place on May 20th, starting at 9 AM along Douglas Street. After the parade there is a whole host of activities in celebration square.
Whale Watching
Perhaps most famously known for Orca whales, the ocean waters off of the coast of Vancouver Island are also home to Humpback and Minke whales. Sight-seeing tours offer guest the chance to get as close to the whales as they can be with most companies carrying a guaranteed sighting guarantee.
The Butchart Gardens
These 55 acres of garden’s are immaculately taken care of by more than 50 gardeners and features more than 900 species of plant. The breath-taking Butchart Gardens have more than 1 million visitors annually and are easily one of Victoria’s top attractions.
Victoria Golf Club
For more than 125 years, Victoria Golf Club has been one of Canada’s best golf courses and has been described as “if Pebble Beach and Pasatiempo had a baby.” This high praise comes from its challenging layout, beautiful coastal views and immaculate upkeep.
Situated in the posh Oak Bay neighbourhood, Victoria Golf Club is perfectly located to take advantage Oak Bay’s amenities including the Ottavio Italian Bakery and the Oak Bay Beach Hotel. Victoria Golf Club is a private course, so you will need to know a member or be a member of a club with reciprocal playing privileges to get on, but if you have the chance to get out and play it, you will not regret it.
As Victoria’s increasingly younger demographic continues to inject brightly painted bohemian shops, cafes and innovative restaurants into their city, Victoria continues to evolve into a world-class city that anyone can visit. With lots to do and easy accessibility, AirSprint Owners can easily access all of Vancouver Island while simultaneously avoiding the hassles of commercial travel helping them make the most out of their long weekend adventures!
